BLM!!!

First, I would like to know what the child knows about the Black Lives Matter movement.  Even if the student doesn't know much, by them asking about it, I will be aware that they might have just a tiny idea or they heard it somewhere or someone else. So I would like to begin by understanding what their perception of this concept may be.  From there I would explain that it is a group of people who have come together form across the nation in an attempt to make a change to our society, or to the way we live.   The Black Lives Matter movement originated in the African American community, however they are many allies of this campaign who are of different ethnicity.  BLM seek to end violence and systematic racism from people of color.  Trying to explain systematic racism to a child might be a bit of an obstacle, so I would continue by saying BLM is bringing awareness to our country that a group of citizens are not be treated fairly or justice solely based off of the color of their skin. In America, we believe in equality and social justice, among many other things, and racism should not be encouraged.  After explaining, I do feel as though it is important to let maybe your supervisor know that a child asked just so other people are aware of the conversation.  It might even be a smart idea to tell their parents that their child was asking about the Black Lives Matter movement so you took the opportunity to teach them something new.  I think it is important for children to know about certain societal struggles because they are the future and at a young age i feel as though they should be taught to accept others and love one another for who we are.

One question I have is why do some people correct others by saying it is not a "movement"?  My FNED professor last year said it was not a movement, and I'm just curious about what some people think of that. 
Another question is do you know of any specific places in our communities that might help children better understand BLM if they visited?
